Celebrating a successful year with the Gateway Empowerment Action Group

The Gateway Empowerment Action Group plays an important role within Community Gateway Association by looking at various ways in which tenants and other members of the CGA community are supported.

The group recently met to look at the Community Empowerment Impact Report for 2016/17. I was surprised at how much CGA has been doing and how many different people CGA have been worked with over the last year. The Impact Report really demonstrates how much work is going into community involvement.

Some of the key figures which stood out to me were:

  • 304 Preston residents have accessed training through Community Gateway
  • 219 local residents took part in work experience related opportunities
  • Just under £30k has been given out to community projects across Preston
  • The CGA Minibus has provided free transport to over 2,177 people across 239 trips.

These are just a few of the details coming from the report which has led to 78.57% of Community Gateway Association tenants rating themselves as fairly to very satisfied with the opportunities offered.

I’m pleased that as a group, we are going to be working on making membership more meaningful in the near future, and can’t wait to continue working alongside CGA as a member of this group.

The new tenant training programme ‘Gateway Academy’ will run from this month and will help us develop our skills and also allow other people to gain skills and knowledge too. As well as this, the Gateway Empowerment Action Group has been heavily involved in the review of the Community Empowerment Strategy.

Finally, I have to admit I was feeling a little nervous before making my contribution to this year’s AGM which took place on Thursday 21st September, however, I was proud to talk about our achievements over the last 12 months and to present an award to an outstanding volunteer.

I look forward to sharing more with you soon, but in the meantime if you would like to know more about how you can get involved with us here at Gateway Central then contact the Community Empowerment Team on tel. 0800 953 0213.
